In the last decade of nineteenth century, Assam Bengal Railway Company Ltd. started the venture to connect Tinsukia in upper Assam and Chittagong port via Badarpur and Lumding to carry tea and jute from Assam to Great Britain. Slowly the small village, named Badarpur, transformed into a small Railway Town and mostly people from east bengal migrated to settle here. Then the colony was under Sylhet district. Then came the want of educational facilities for the wards of railway-men which was unavailable at Badarpur at that time. due to increasing pressure, a school namely ' Woods M. E. School' was established in the year 1909. The school existed at different location at different time. There was also a demand for separate educational institution for girls and finally 'Victory Lower Primary School for Girls' was established in 1919. Both the schools were co-existed at that time. At the end of 1941, A.B. railway's contract expired and Eastern Bengal Railway (EBR) took over it. EBR had two zones, namely AB Zone and EB Zone, and the schools were under A. B. Zone. After independence, the part of EBR in India was renamed as Assam Railway and the school also came under it. In the last part of 1947 or in the first part of 1948, Woods M. E. School upgraded to Class - X and higher section was functioning as non-railway school under the head mastership of Mr. Suresh Ch. Kar. On 04-02-1952, Mr. Anil Behari Paul Choudhury took over the charge of entire school as Mr. Suresh Ch. Kar was unable to continue on health ground. On 14-04-1952, Assam Railway merged into North Eastern Railway (IR Zone) and on 01-05-1952, railway administration took over the school which was running as railway aided non-railway school and it was renamed as Railway High English School. Later it was again renamed as Railway High School. In the year 1981, the school was upgraded to higher secondary level with Science and Arts streams and accordingly the school was again renamed as Railway Higher Secondary School which is the present name of the school.
